What Your Brain Knows Now

Have you ever noticed that after you buy a new car, every time you turn around you are seeing the same kind of car everywhere when they were never noticed before?

This is what brain awareness does.  There are so many images and things to see, our brains filter them and look only for evidence of that which is in our current awareness.

Where this really gets interesting is when our awareness is tuned into our thoughts – because the same kind of filter exists for things we think.

So when the dominant thoughts are:

  • Worthlessness
  • Failure
  • Hatred
  • Frustration

Your brain goes to work filtering things around you to find evidence of your current awareness.

When your dominant thoughts are:

  • Success
  • Belief
  • Faith in people
  • Happiness

Your brain also goes to work filtering things around you to find evidence of that current awareness.

Where it gets even more interesting than that, is when you begin focusing your thoughts on things more positive than negative.  Is it “luck” when someone is in the right place at the right time, or are they simply aware of the possibility and thus sought out the evidence around them?  This might be why some recognize opportunity and others completely miss it.

Where is your current awareness?

Leadership Lessons From Mom!

All of us have a background and history.  Many of the lessons I learned about leadership were really common sense child-rearing lessons passed on from one of the most remarkable people I know, my Mother.  With Mother’s Day approaching I thought I would share a few with you.

Respect Everyone: No one ever truly knows anyone, what they’ve experienced, what they’re going through now, or who they are internally.  Showing respect recognizes everyone partakes in struggle and triumph and deserves respect.

If You Can’t Share it With Your Grandmother, You Shouldn’t Say it, Write it or Do it: This is especially true now, be impeccable with all communication.  Words tossed in rudeness, anger, haste or without thought will always come back to bite you in the butt. In this day of high-speed internet and Social Media, it’ll bite immediately, and it could cost you your job or force you to repeat it in court!

Be a Cheerleader: No, not a pom-pom shaking acrobatic one (unless that’s what you love to do), I mean cheer on the success, efforts and opportunities of others, just like you would your own child. Being happy for others rather than resentful feeds your soul.

Don’t Take Yourself So Seriously: Sometimes life is absurd, period.  People react and are reacted to in ways unexpected.  Situations don’t always work out as planned and one needs to redirect.  Laugh!  Find the humour and the gems of wisdom within the unexpected.  You will be all the healthier for it and you’ll make more friends!

Clean Your Own Room First: Before you go criticizing others, take a good look at your own life.  The day you can say everything in your own life is perfect, you are exactly who you wish to be and you have no tasks left to perform, go criticize someone else. Until then, collaborate, help, take part and learn the art of allowing, influencing and encouraging others in their path! We live in the same house!

Clean Out Your Backpack: Pay attention to what you choose to hang onto.  Holding onto negative emotions, old resentments, anger and frustration is no different than choosing not to take that full milk container out of your backpack, after a while it begins to stink and rot and it ruins things!

Use Your Stuff: My mom lit her candles, used her good dishes and wasn’t afraid of polishing silver or using white table cloths.  The deal is, you have it so use it! You are born with and have developed many gifts, talents and strengths worth sharing.  You’ll find joy in using them!

Mom taught more lessons than that and I can guarantee you, I wasn’t always a quick study!  The beauty of having a mom who models great leadership is that she’s willing to be repetitive, probably to the point of frustration at times!  Lucky me that she still continues to persist in providing the lessons in life that, for some, only experience will drive home.  Thanks Mom, for being remarkable!

Changing The World For Humanity – What Are You Doing?

In my last post I put out a challenge to ask what you are doing to change the world in your home, at work, within your community and for the world. The first of this series is based on Humanity.

December 10 celebrates human rights day. Human rights surpasses religion and is about recognizing “dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family”.

The challenge is to stop, take a close look at how you, as an individual, can make a difference in the world starting at home, at work, in your community and then looking around at your contribution to the world.  Add your changes to the others!

Here are just a few of the responses I have received so far:
> I work as an educator in addition to my “day job”.
I also serve on community non-profit boards and committees to advance art in the region.

> Recycle
Volunteer my time to various shelters
Donate money to charities
Pray every day for peace on earth

> Home: I am changing my cooking schedules to accommodate my university son’s exams
Work: I am volunteering my time and efforts for students needing decorating expertise on their formal dance.
Community: Sit on one Board of Directors and on the event committee with the Chamber of Commerce.
World: I am working hard at being more energy conscious and efficient.

In the spirit of understanding what Human Rights are, please consider reading  The Universal Declaration of Human Rights  created by the United Nations.

Take on the challenge and share as many as you possibly can this week.
Stop back next week to hear more about what others are doing to change the world and find out what the next challenge is.
Peace and good will to all.

Are Your Employees as Satisfied With Their Leaders as the Leaders Are?

I am going to begin this post by letting you know that we work with many fantastic leaders who really care about their people.  You know the ones, these are folks who truly want to be great leaders, their staff loves them and they’re doing most of the right things to inspire, motivate and encourage staff.  As a result, the ‘best-of-the-best’ stay at their company, their productivity is fantastic and their culture rocks.  So why do they hire a Leadership Strategist?  Because truly GREAT leaders know they don’t have all the answers, that there is room to grow and because they want to kick it up a notch and make a difference, extending their skills in leadership helps them truly Make the Mark!

What are compelling and interesting are the comments I receive from the people in the trenches, regular every day employees who are doing all the functions to make that business run.  I’ll be out at a party or a networking event and someone will ask me what I do.  When I say, “I am changing the world one manager at a time”, they almost always comment, “Oh my God, our company sure needs you!  The managers at our company make it unbearable.  It’s so difficult to show up every day and I am nauseous driving to work.  I like the work I do, but there is absolutely NO leadership in our company, it is ALL about the spread sheet!”

Sound familiar?  The shocking news is this, that’s the norm and not the exception for many large companies.  An even more shocking piece of news is that the managers in these companies truly believe they are great!  They don’t hire external consultants in leadership or management development, and many of them are not working diligently to put effective programs in place to retain their most exceptional people or create a better culture.  They are executive to middle managers who believe they have nothing more to learn about leadership, yet they are the ones who need it most.

This proves a few points I have discovered in the launching of my own business:

1.        A marketing concept that many of us will be familiar with is: ‘people don’t buy what they need, they buy what they want!’    Poor leaders don’t seem to WANT to be better leaders, or they’re not measured on leadership acumen.

2.       People or companies who do budget in personal or career development for their leaders truly care about investing in themselves and their company. Great leaders WANT to become even greater.

3.       In companies with a struggling culture, there is a significant disconnect between what the executive to middle managers believe and what the rest of the employees actually feel.

Those three topics could incite a full thesis on leadership and management, but I’ll leave that for another day.

With the information above, I challenge you to take a good hard look at yourself and your company.  Do a double-take and hip-check on your attitude about growth and personal development.  If you’re in the trenches wanting to reach middle management or executive leadership, think about what you’re willing to do now to work on being the best you can be and study to be an exceptional leader.

If you were able to improve on your leadership skills and understand what it takes to really care about the people, would it be worth it?  What if you knew that it really is the people who drive the success of the company, wouldn’t you want to make sure you did your best to support them?

What kind of investment are you willing to make?  Isn’t your best investment always in yourself?

Life is a cycle with many growth spurts, no one has all the answers (not even me) and here is the deal, those willing to accept that they still have lots to learn are those who will affect the world in the most positive manner.

I choose to be the best I can be.  I choose to make a difference by positively affecting the people in my organization.  I want to be a great role-model and an exceptional leader.  Because of this, I read as many professional and personal development books I can.  I take part in as many opportunities as possible to glean knowledge from people who I admire and believe are living the leadership dream.

Start now, if you’re not a leader, start before you get there.  For those of you already in a position of affecting the lives of your employees get on board! Recognize there are always ways to improve, always ways to kick it up a notch!  Be a Manager Making the Mark!
